Transitional Kindergarten
Welcome to the Journey: Starting School in RUSD
Starting school is a milestone moment for children and their families, marking the beginning of a lifelong educational journey. Over the years, California's academic standards have evolved: many skills once reserved for first grade are now part of the kindergarten curriculum.
To help our youngest learners meet these higher expectations, the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 adjusted the enrollment age. Children must now be 5 years old by September 1 to enter transitional kindergarten. However, this law also created a wonderful opportunity for children who fall just outside that window: Transitional Kindergarten (TK).
What is Transitional Kindergarten?
Think of TK as a "bridge" year. It is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program designed specifically for children who turn 5 between September 2 and December 2.
